Well written, rigorous enough yet quite practical. Complete with worked-out examples. Covers a breadth of topics, including bond math, annuities and survival modeling. Recommended.

Perfect for me a wanna-be actuary puzzled by people throwing out 4% withdrawal rules and 20% savings rates and wondering where in the hell those numbers came from. This book explains the formulas used to derive them and enables you to apply your own assumptions and get your own numbers. Full explanation of why he prefers a probability distribution for expected returns rather than montecarlo simulations using historical returns. Formulas given give you confidence that your monte carlo model is giving you reasonable results.Not all formulas derived from scratch, but proof available on the web.Essential if you want to "do the math" or make reasonableness checks on monte carlo model outputs.

I read the book from front to cover. It's combination of actuarial principles and the application to highly relevant retirement issues is unique. Most of the actuarial books are impossible to read even for well trained economists. A way to keep consulting income for actuaries? There is a huge gap between finance people and insurance guys. Milevskys book is a long needed and important step to bring those two branches closer together - to start solving real problems in real life. A must have on the desk of financial planners, retirement economists and bankers looking for problems which are difficult but relevant in application.

This earlier book is a very detailed discussion of the computations that go into the question of retirement income. For those who are math oriented, this is a good book to begin to get insight into solving the retirement income question. Create Your Own Pension Plan for a Secure Financial Future will help, and it is an easier read for most, especially the non math oriented.As a holder of a physics degree, the math so far applies to static periods, i.e. considering what age a person currently is (t for time is static). However, the time period continually decreases since longevity is continually shortening as a person ages. Therefore, the time should be evaluated as delta t or changing time. In practice, I see this difference between ages emerge as I evaluate different situations. Readjusting the formula for each age, as one ages, does not work since in practice this results in taking more out early and having to retrench later.However, getting deeper insight into the mathematical approach is extremely enlightening and useful to those who are so oriented.Wealth Odyssey: The Essential Road Map For Your Financial Journey Where Is It You Are Really Trying To Go With Money?

I was looking for a book to give to my daughter to help her with her social skills. She is 14 and does not have a diagnosis, but had shared with me that she struggles with certain social skills ( such as being aware that the feelings of others might be different than her own, or how to support a friend who is going through a difficult time). A lot of the books out there about improving your social skills are either too clinical, aimed at younger kids, or are meant for professionals looking to network better. I read this through before giving it to my daughter. I like the author's overall approach and the constant emphasis on sincerity and kindness in relationships. He presents social skills in terms of fairly easy to remember principles, rather than a lot of theory, abstract ideas, or case studies (there are some personal examples though). Although the target audience seems to be young adults, I found that it was very appropriate for my daughter. I was a little nervous about the chapter on relationships, but was relieved that the author's values align fairly well with my own and I felt comfortable with my daughter reading it. My daughter hasn't shared with me her thoughts about it ( but that's par for the course with her) but she was happy about the idea of having a book to refer to. It was actually a revelation to her that social skills are something that she can learn more about and get better at. I work in the special education field, and I will be recommending this book to students and parents.

While many guides will tell you to go out and make friends, or to engage someone in conversation, or to make eye contact, they don't explain exactly how to go about each of those activities. In Improve Your Social Skills, author Daniel Wendler breaks down each component of social interaction in a way that is friendly, understandable, and practical.While many guides meticulously go through each and every body signal a person may project, this guide simply breaks down body language into two categories - "open" and "closed." Done! Now instead of over-analyzing someone's body language, I can focus on the other person and the conversation!While many guides promote tricks and gimmicks to put people down and artificially project confidence, Improve Your Social Skills stresses the importance of respect and relationship. I don't have to pretend to be someone else or put on airs or play a part. Instead, this guide encourages me to be my best self and make fruitful and lasting friendships with others to help them be their best selves, too.Although it would have been nice to see some tips or examples regarding workplace behavior and professionalism, I love this guide for the subjects it does cover. This guide is unlike any other, and I can't recommend it enough.

This is a fantastic book for getting started on social skills. I work as a mental health counselor in Portland, OR and I often work with individuals with disabilities. Margaret Furtado, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., a registered and licensed dietitian-nutritionist with almost 20 years' clinical experience, is currently part of the multidisciplinary team at the Massachusetts General Hospital-MGH Weight Center, where she counsels patients on both medical and surgical weight loss (including gastric bypass and gastric banding procedures). Prior to working at MGH, Ms. Furtado spent 4 years working at Tuftss New England Medical Center's (NEMC) Obesity Consult Center, providing both individual and group consultations for gastric bypass, gastric banding and BPD surgery patients. It was while at NEMC that she wrote Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery. Margaret earned her Master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Florida International University in Miami, FL., and her B.S. degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Rhode Island. TEXTURE: Regular

INGREDIENTS

—Cooking spray

—1 pound (455 g) sirloin steak, cut into 1/2-inch (1.25-cm) pieces

—1 tablespoon (15 ml) extra-virgin olive oil

—2 tablespoons (20 g) finely minced shallots

—1 package (8 ounces, or 227 g) baby portabella mushrooms, sliced

—1 teaspoon garlic, minced

—1 tablespoon (15 ml) low-sodium soy sauce

—3 tablespoons (23 g) whole-wheat flour

—1 1/2 cups (355 ml) low-fat, low-sodium beef broth

—1/2 teaspoon black pepper

—1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

—1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

DIRECTIONS

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Coat the skillet with the cooking spray and brown the steak on all sides. Remove from the pan, and cover.

Heat the olive oil in the pan and then add the shallots and mushrooms; sauté for approximately 4 minutes, or until the mushrooms and shallots are cooked through. Next, add the garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds. Stir in the soy sauce. Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture, and cook for approximately 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in the beef broth. Add the pepper, salt, and thyme, and bring to a simmer. Cook for approximately 4 to 5 minutes, or until the mixture is thickened. Add the beef back to the pan and cook for another minute.

YIELD: Makes 6 (about 3⁄4-cup) servings.

I bought this after listening to one of the author's TED talks. It has a lot of interesting information about some of our odd quirks. The writing, like the author's speeches, is very humorous. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

The brain is a silly thing. You like to think of it as a supercomputer that runs your life, but it is far from that. The brain does not store memories like a hard drive. Its recall process seems completely ineffective. Compared to other animals, our brains are huge and they take up an unfathomable amount of energy. Yet our brains are more effective that any computer on earth.Stumbling on Happiness is a fun stroll through brain studies throughout history. Over and over again, Gilbert introduces another study that shows you the silliness of your brain. By the end of the book, you will wonder how we have accomplished so much as humans.This is fun read. It is not a deep book but a great light-hearted look at the silly side of our humanness.

This book is yet another entry in the Gladwell-esque academic-discoveries-for-the-masses category and has the same issues: an exciting premise (why do we fail at forecasting happiness / our imagination has flaws), a casual and sometimes witty voice and most importantly, an excessive length relative to its subject matter. The whole â€œyour brain has flawsâ€ argument has much in common with better books such as Kahnemanâ€™s and this book suffers from a lack of narrative arc: itâ€™s stuffed too full of experiments and observations and doesnâ€™t actually drive towards its conclusion - which is something that can be accomplished much more quickly than 260 pages.

No one book will ever solve all your problems and show you The Way. As Seneca said, "As long as you live, keep learning to live." But even that learning bit is not easy with all the noise of experience. That's where Daniel Gilbert's little nugget helps. It helps you eliminate a lot of noise with some powerful insights drawn from psychological studies. The three most useful for me are these: (1) It's not the future as such, but it's the planning for the future that makes you anxious. (2) All your planning for, say, five years later is based on the implicit assumption that you will be the same as you are now and think the same as you do now, five years later. (3) Quite likely, your particular circumstances are not entirely new to humanity and someone has been on the path (or parts of the path) you will end up taking so you can learn from them. So be ready to stumble and you may stumble on happiness. (This review is for the print version of the book. I also ordered a Kindle version to keep on my smartphone but I haven't flicked through it yet, so I wouldn't know if there is anything not quite right about the Kindle presentation.)

The theme of this book is that people are stupid, incompetent, and incapable of making rational decisions. The au. says that this book is not written to help you achieve happiness. This is true. If the au. is correct, you are not going to get any except, evidently, through dumb luck. If you want to know how to be happy, try other books.

The general idea of this book is interesting, and I'm sure would make a good book, if the author could manage to put aside his frequent attempts to be funny. I made it about eleven pages into this book - twice. I stopped reading at the same place both times. "Phineas Gage was a foreman for the Rutland Railroad who, on a lovely autumn day in 1848, ignited a small explosion in the vicinity of his feet, launching a three-and-a-half-foot long iron rod into the air, which Phineas cleverly caught with his face." Is that Gilbert's idea of clever? Because his writing sure isn't. The eleven pages I read are riddled with this crappy, juvenile humor.

Based on this book's title and a cursory glance at some reviews, I figured that this is probably just another book on happiness, but I decided to read it anyway since the ratings are generally pretty good, credible people have endorsed it, and the topic is important. I'm pleased to report that the book far exceeded my expectations and represents an important and original contribution to this genre. Despite having read quite a few books over the years, including several good ones on happiness, I learned a lot of new and useful things from this book.In fact, this book is so packed with insights that I'll need to carefully go through it again (which I look forward to). Some readers may feel that the book goes into too many topics which are tangential to the main argument, but I personally very much appreciated the way Gilbert builds his case systematically and thoroughly, providing us with a wide array of intellectual fringe benefits in the process. Indeed, while the focus of the book is on happiness, the scope of the book is actually much broader than just happiness.The content of the book is mostly drawn from experimental psychology (the good kind), and Gilbert describes many experiments in just the right amount of detail. I sometimes felt that he neglected plausible alternative interpretations of the experimental results, but I see this as a relatively minor issue. The earlier parts of the book also mixed in some Western philosophy, which I thought was a nice touch. And the many quotes from Shakespeare were also apropo since, after all, Shakespeare just about single-handedly encapsulated the full spectrum of human experience and behavior into his body of work!Given the book's rich content, it's hard to summarize this book, but I would say that the (greatly oversimplified) main idea is that both our memory and imagination are inherently faulty, which often causes us to choose suboptimally when it comes to decisions which affect our future happiness. We can partly get around that problem by querying people who are currently having the experience we're considering having, but that approach doesn't always work, plus we're inherently resistant to taking that approach anyway. However, again, this is just an oversimplification, and you really need to read this book in its entirety.Regarding Gilbert's writing style, I think he's quite clear and easy to follow, and he also employs humor throughout the book. To be honest, I initially found his humor superfluous and a bit annoying, but I gradually came to appreciate it, since it lightens the book's atmosphere and thereby helps to sustain the reader's stamina.Overall, this is a superb book and I highly recommend it if you want to be happier, or even if you're just interested in what makes people tick. Five stars don't even begin to do justice to this book.
